Food Technology in schools
This overview of the Food Technology subject area comes from Nicky Rehner, chef turned secondary Food Technology and Hospitality educator.
Food Technology is an academic technologies subject that develops students’ ability to think critically, solve problems creatively, communicate effectively, collaborate with others, and design innovative solutions for real-world challenges. Students investigate food systems, sustainability, nutrition, production, consumer needs, emerging technologies, entrepreneurship, and the future of the food industry. They investigate, plan, develop prototypes, test, evaluate, refine, and justify their decisions using evidence and reflective thinking.
Success in Food Technology is not measured by producing the “best” meal. It is demonstrated through thoughtful planning, informed decision-making, effective communication, design thinking, evaluation, and reflection—skills that prepare students for life well beyond the classroom.
This food technology learning process can be modified to suit a specific project, and is demonstrated through this challenge pack The anatomy of a signature dish.
